Mordred - Jackson Performer PS-6T / PS-67 Kelly - 1990s - Gloss Black
Apparently we’re still doing black and pointy.
We didn’t actually decide to have a theme. It just sort of happened, and at this point the guitars appear to be organising themselves.
Mordred is a 1990s Jackson Performer PS-6T / PS-67 Kelly, and he looks less like a musical instrument and more like something you’d use to overthrow Camelot.
The Performer Series comes from an interesting period in Jackson history, taking the gloriously excessive ingredients the brand had become known for and putting them into guitars that were rather more attainable than their top-end counterparts.
And Mordred has rather a lot of Jackson going on.
That enormous asymmetrical Kelly body is paired with a bolt-on maple neck and rosewood fingerboard carrying a full 24 frets, because apparently stopping at 22 would have shown an unacceptable degree of restraint.
The neck culminates in that enormous pointed six-in-line Jackson headstock, because clearly the body hadn’t already presented enough potential hazards.
Down at the dangerous end sits a Jackson double-locking tremolo paired with a locking nut, while a pair of Jackson humbuckers are selected by a three-way toggle and controlled by one wonderfully uncomplicated volume knob.
There is no tone control.
Mordred has a tone.
You don’t get to change it.
Frankly, we respect the confidence.
Jackson-branded tuners complete the black hardware, because apparently introducing another colour at this stage would have compromised the mission.
Mordred has been stripped down, thoroughly cleaned, checked over, restrung and properly set up, with the frets levelled where required, crowned and polished as part of our usual workshop process.
He carries some age-related marks when you go looking for them, as you’d expect from a roughly three-decade-old pointy guitar rather than a museum exhibit, but overall he presents beautifully. The Gloss Black finish has come back with a fantastic deep shine and, perhaps most impressively, those notoriously vulnerable Kelly body points have survived remarkably well.
He’s wonderfully and unapologetically of his era.
No roasted maple. No tasteful pastel finish. No attempt whatsoever to blend into the background.
Just 24 frets, two humbuckers, a double-locking tremolo, an enormous pointed headstock and enough sharp edges to make a risk assessor visibly uncomfortable.
We approve.
Mordred is ready for adoption for £350.
