Jackson JS Series RR Minion Short-Scale Electric Guitar in Snow White

Meet Crowley, a compact Jackson RR Minion finished in Snow White with black pinstripes, 22.5-inch scale length, 24 jumbo frets and dual Jackson high-output humbuckers.

Crowley had spent his time hanging largely unplayed on a wall. Although relatively tidy cosmetically, his dry fingerboard, rough factory fretwork, tuning instability and choking bends meant this little Rhoads wasn't performing anything like his full-sized relatives.

Following fretwork, cosmetic repairs and a complete short-scale-specific professional setup at The Stray Chord, Crowley was successfully rehomed for £145.

About Crowley

The Jackson RR Minion takes one of Jackson's most recognisable designs and shrinks it into a compact approximately two-thirds-scale instrument without abandoning the features that make a Rhoads a Rhoads.

Its angular Rhoads V-style poplar body is paired with a graphite-reinforced maple speed neck and an extremely compact 22.5-inch scale length, making the RR Minion particularly suitable for smaller hands, travelling, sofa playing or players who simply enjoy the feel of very short-scale guitars.

Unlike many compact beginner instruments, Crowley retains a full 24-jumbo-fret layout. His Purpleheart fingerboard features Jackson's traditional pearloid Sharkfin inlays, maintaining the unmistakable visual identity of the full-sized models.

Two Jackson high-output humbuckers provide the appropriately aggressive voice, controlled by master volume and master tone controls with a three-way pickup selector.

Crowley's Snow White finish is contrasted by black pinstriping and black hardware, giving the little RR substantially more attitude than its dimensions might suggest.

Restoration & setup

Although Crowley arrived in comparatively good cosmetic condition, his factory setup and fret finishing needed considerable improvement.

During his rehabilitation at The Stray Chord he received:

  • Complete professional setup
  • Neck relief precisely adjusted
  • All 24 jumbo frets levelled
  • Frets recrowned and polished to a mirror finish
  • Fret ends dressed and refined
  • Fingerboard edges carefully rolled
  • Purpleheart fingerboard thoroughly cleaned and conditioned
  • Nut slots carefully refined
  • Nut graphite-lubricated to reduce string friction
  • Pickup heights balanced across all six strings
  • Electronics and controls cleaned and serviced
  • Bridge action lowered and optimised
  • Full intonation
  • Body cleaned and polished to remove surface haze
  • Headstock damage carefully drop-filled and repaired
  • Chip to the pointed headstock tip restored
  • Fresh set of Ernie Ball 12-gauge strings fitted
  • Final tuning-stability and playability inspection

Particular attention was paid to Crowley's 22.5-inch scale length. He had previously been fitted with strings that provided insufficient tension, contributing to an unstable and insubstantial playing feel.

Moving to heavier 12-gauge strings substantially increased tension and helped provide a firmer response and improved tuning stability while retaining the easy fretting associated with the very short scale.

Crowley's adoption

🤍🖤 REHOMED 🖤🤍

Crowley may only be little, but after rehabilitation he was finally ready to cause full-sized trouble and found his new home.

He is no longer available for adoption, but his page remains permanently in The Stray Chord Rehomed Archive, documenting his restoration and providing a reference for players researching the Jackson JS Series RR Minion short-scale guitar.
