Dexter! - WestCreek High Voltage FR 2024 Matte Black

Yesterday’s Bellatrix was the premium pointy psychopath.

Dexter is what happens when you want much of the same menace on a considerably smaller budget, with the added benefit of an enormous red button.

This 2024 WestCreek High Voltage FR takes an already outrageous angular body shape, covers virtually everything in matte black and equips it with the sort of specification that makes its price rather difficult to believe.

The mahogany body is paired with a maple neck and rosewood fingerboard, decorated with enormous pearloid shark-fin style inlays. The neck feels quick and comfortable, and after a complete trip across our workshop Dexter has proved to be a genuinely enjoyable guitar to play rather than merely an entertaining object to look at.

Electronics are refreshingly uncomplicated. A single high-output bridge humbucker provides the noise, with volume and tone controls to tame it.

Then there is the button.

The bright red arcade-style button on the upper bout is a momentary killswitch. Pressing it instantly cuts the guitar’s output, allowing rapid rhythmic and stuttering effects.

It is completely unnecessary.

It is also tremendous fun.

The FR designation brings another particularly useful piece of hardware: a genuine Floyd Rose Special double-locking tremolo, complete with locking nut, fine tuners and tremolo arm. The Floyd Rose Special retains the fundamental double-locking design of the Original Floyd Rose, making Dexter properly equipped for dive bombs, squeals, flutters and whatever other indignities his next owner wishes to inflict upon him.

Finished in matte black with matching black hardware, the High Voltage’s angular body looks particularly good in this configuration. The giant pearloid inlays provide almost the only visual interruption, apart from that suspicious little red button.

Dexter has been thoroughly cleaned, inspected and professionally set up in our workshop. His frets have been levelled, crowned and polished as part of our standard preparation process, and he is ready for his next home.

Bellatrix might be the premium one.

Dexter has a button.

Checkmate.
